Itch-Scratch Cycle

Eczema

Are you an unwilling participant in the dreaded itch-scratch cycle?  If you suffer from eczema or atopic dermatitis, then you know what we are referring to.  The worst part of the itch-scratch cycle is exactly that; it’s a vicious cycle.  You start off with having itchy skin which causes you to scratch incessantly.  Depending on the severity of your condition you may continue scratching until your skin bleeds and inflammatory chemicals are released thus causing you to itch even more.  From there, the cycle starts over again.

Although having atopic dermatitis is a chronic condition that does not have a cure, relief is available. First, you must commit to taking excellent care of your skin.  Remember only to take warm showers and moisturize immediately afterwards with an unscented lotion. Also, avoid dramatic temperature changes if possible and use a humidifier when the weather is colder and dryer out.  Always be sure to wear breathable cotton clothing especially if you have been experiencing flare ups.  Lastly, pay attention to your triggers.  If pet dander or dust mites are the “enemy”, then remove rugs, dust often, and be sure to give your pets dander treatments.

Even though you can do everything right in taking pristine care of your skin, your eczema will most likely always be there no matter what.  To help alleviate the itch which in turn will eliminate the scratch, you will need a prescription from your doctor.  This medication may need to be tweaked over a period of time to see which solution works best for your condition.  The good news is this is our expertise here at PICP.  We work with our patients until the perfect medication for their individual needs has been created providing them with the best quality of life possible.  If you or a loved one is suffering from eczema, then call or stop by for a consult and let us help you feel normal again!
